We hear a lot about addiction - it's a well-known danger. Most parents are happy if their children stay at home and they don't go out at night. They think that their children, who are playing quietly in their bedrooms, are safe. In fact, they may be in danger from another type of drug - their computer. Over 10 million were spent on computer toys and games in 1989. Many parents feel that if they buy a computer for their children, they are giving them a useful educational tool.
Certainly computers can be educational. But, many times, the computer disappears into the bedroom and is used only for stupid and violent games. The children disappear with their computers, spending sometimes up to thirty hours a week playing with them. It doesn't help their education at all. They don't do their homework and they start doing badly at school.
Boys are more likely to become addicts than girls and their addiction most usually begins between the ages of nine and eleven. They prefer their computer to the company of other children, computer games follow rules, people don't. They forget how to play and.talk to other children. Eventually they became afraid of people, their only friend is the computer.
There is help for computer addicts. They can go to a center in London where they learn to live without computers. Parents are told to put away the machine and only allow it to be used a few hours a week. The addicts learn to talk to each other and play different games - card or board games- with people instead of machines.
