1. Động từ tận cùng bằng e, ta bỏ e câm rồi mới thêm ing.
Ví dụ:
take => taking
drive => driving
Nhưng nếu E là một âm tiết thì ta phải giữ nguyên nó nhé
Ví dụ:
see => seeing
agree => agreeing
Age => Ageing (aging AmE)
2. Động từ tận cùng bằng ie, ta biến ie thành Y rồi thêm ING.
Hay nói nhanh ta sẽ đổi ie thành Ying.
Ví dụ:
lie => lying
die => dying
Chú ý: dying có nghĩa là đang chết. khác với từ Dyeing (Đang nhuộm vải) - có dạng nguyên mẫu là Dye.
Các động từ tận cùng bằng y thì chúng ta chỉ việc thêm ing như bình thường.
Ví dụ: hurry => hurrying
3. Nhân đôi phụ âm cuối trước khi thêm -ing
3.1- khi động từ có duy nhất một âm tiết và tận cùng bằng “1 nguyên âm + 1 phụ âm” thì ta nhân đôi phụ âm cuối trước khi thêm ING
Ví dụ:
win => winning
put => putting
3.2- Trong trường hợp động từ có từ hai âm tiết trở lên, ta chỉ nhân đôi phụ âm khi dấu nhấn âm rơi vào âm tiết cuối cùng.
Ví dụ: perˈmit => perˈmitting
preˈfer => preˈferring
3.3- Nhưng không nhân đôi phụ âm khi dấu nhấn âm không rơi vào âm tiết cuối.
Ví dụ:
open => opening
enter => entering
Trường hợp ngoại lệ: Người anh và người mỹ có 2 cách thêm ing khác nhau đối với ký tự cuối cùng “l” của động từ. Nếu là người Mỹ thì chỉ cần thêm ING sau đó mà không cần biết dấu nhấn có nằm ở vần cuối hay không. còn nếu là người Anh thì họ sử dụng giống như quy tắc 3.2 nêu bên trên
Ví dụ: travel => travelling(ở Mỹ dùng là: traveling)
Các trường hợp còn lại chúng ta cứ thoải mái mà thêm ING sau động từ để thành lập danh động từ hoặc hiện tại phân từ
