1. Kalpana Chawla loved flying since she was young. She often asked her father to take her on plane rides near her home in Karnal, India. Her passion for flying inspired her to study aeronautical engineering. After earning her degree in India, she moved to the United States and became a U.S. citizen in the 1980s.
2. Kalpana joined NASA in 1988. Six years later, she began training to become an astronaut. In 1997, Kalpana made history as the first Indian-born woman in space aboard the space shuttle Columbia.
