Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the United States has published a report on the most stressful jobs in the US as compared to 1983. The results are sometimes surprising, and sometimes pretty predictable. A Carnegie Mellon looked at a job stress study from 1983, and it’s interesting to compare this year’s results with the research from that year. In doing so, you can get an interesting snapshot of changes in US society between then and now, especially if you focus on the top ten most stressful jobs. Some jobs have increased in stress levels, while others have remained the same. B For example, in 1987, firefighters, pilots, senior executives, broadcasters, and police officers were all at the top of the list. And today, they remain high-stress jobs. Today, a firefighter has a score of 60.5, police officer has a stress score of 53.8, a broadcaster is 47.3, and an executive is 48.4. C Another interesting point is that the most stressful job this year is a military officer. The least stressful job is an information security analyst, which ranks at 3.8 out of 100. Also, according to the study, being an airline pilot is just as stressful as being a firefighter, at 60.5. Other stressful jobs include event coordinator (40.9), public relations executive (48.4), and taxi driver (46.3).D Other occupations also reveal interesting results – some of the least stressful jobs are a librarian (10.6), a hairstylist (7.5), and a medical laboratory technician (9.0). Somewhat surprisingly, a university professor is only 6.9 on the stress scale, but only for “tenured” professors, which means it’s very difficult to lose your job. However, all jobs in 2016 are more stressful than in 1983, as there is more pressure to make money and no ability to turn off information. The combination of these two factors heightens stress for all occupations. 1. Firefighters have the highest stress level in the latest report. 2. Librarians have the higher stress level than university professors. 3. The least stressful job in the latest report is university professors in general. 4. All occupations’ stress levels decreased over a period of 33 years, from 1983 to 2016. True False nha mn

Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springsdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology in college and zoology at Johns Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree in 1933. In 1936, she was hired by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, where she worked most of her life.

Carson’s first book, Under the Sea Wind, was published in 1941. It received excellent reviews, but sales were poor until it was reissued in 1952. In that year, she published The Sea Around Us, which provided a fascinating look beneath the ocean’s surface, emphasizing human history as well as geology and marine biology. Her imagery and language had a poetic quality. Carson consulted no less than 1,000 printed sources. She had voluminous correspondence and frequent discussions with experts in the field. However, she always realized the limitations of her non-technical readers.

In 1962, Carson published Silence Spring, a book that sparked considerable controversy. It proved how much harm was done by the uncontrolled, reckless use of insecticides. She detailed how they poison the food supply of animals, kill birds, and contaminate human food. At that time, spokesmen for the chemical industry mounted personal attacks against Carson and issued propaganda to indicate that her findings were flawed. However, her work was vindicated by a 1963 report of the President’s Science Advisory Committee.

According to the passage, what did Carson primarily study at Johns Hopkins University?

A. Oceanography

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Lighthouses are towers with strong lights that help mariners plot their position, inform them that land is near, and warn them of dangerous rocks and reefs. They are placed at prominent points on the coast and on islands, reefs, and sandbars.

Every lighthouse has a distinctive pattern of light known as its characteristic. There are five basic characteristics: fixed, flashing, occulting, group flashing, and group occulting. A fixed signal is a steady beam. A flashing signal has periods of darkness longer than periods of light, while an occulting signal’s periods of light are longer. A group-flashing light gives off two or more flashes at regular intervals, and a group - occulting signal consists of a fixed light with two or more periods of darkness at regular intervals. Some lighthouses use lights of different colors as well, and today, most lighthouses are also equipped with radio beacons. The three types of apparatus used to produce the signals are the catoptric, in which metal is used to reflect the light; the dioptric, in which glass is used; and the catadioptric, in which both glass and metal are used.

In the daytime, lighthouses can usually be identified by their structure alone. The most typical structure is a tower tapering at the top, but some, such as the Bastion Lighthouse on the Saint Lawrence River, are shaped like pyramids, and others, such as the Race Rock light, look like wooden houses sitting on high platforms. Still others, such as The American Shoal lighthouse off the Florida Coast, are skeletal towers of steel. Where lighthouses might be contused in daylight, they can be distinguished by day- marker patterns - designed of checks and stripes painted in vivid colors on lighthouse walls.

In the past, the job of lighthouse keeper was lonely and difficult if somewhat romantic. Lighthouse keepers put in hours of tedious work maintaining the lights. Today, lighthouses are almost entirely automated with humans supplying only occasional maintenance. Because of improvements in navigational technology, the importance of lighthouses has diminished. There are only about 340 functioning lighthouses in existence in the United States today, compared to about 1,500 in 1900, and there are only about 1,400 functioning lighthouses outside the United States. Some decommissioned lighthouses have been preserved as historical monument.

The author implies that, compared to those of the past, contemporary lighthouses______.

A. employ more powerful lights

B. require less maintenance

C. are more difficult to operate

D. are more romantic
