Energy makes change; it does things for us. It moves cars along the road and boats over the water. It bakes a cake in the oven and keeps ice frozen in the freezer. It plays our favourite songs on the radio and lights our homes. Energy makes our bodies grow and allows our minds to think. Scientists define energy as the ability to do work. People have learned how to change energy from one from one form to another so that we can do work more easily and live more comfortably.

All forms of energy are stored in different ways, in the energy sources that we use every day. These sources are divided into two groups – renewable and nonrenewable. Renewable energy source is an energy source that can be replenished in a short period of time. Nonrenewable energy source is an energy source that we are using up and cannot recreate in a short period of time.

Renewable energy sources include solar energy, which comes from the Sun and can be turned into electricity and heat. Wind, geothermal energy from inside the Earth, biomass from plants, and hydropower and ocean energy from water are also renewable energy sources.

However, we get most of our energy from nonrenewable energy sources, which include the fossil fuels – oil, natural gas, and coal. They’re called fossil fuels because they were formed over millions and millions of years by the action of heat from the Earth’s core and pressure from rock and soil on the remains of dead plants and animals. Another nonrenewable energy source is the element uranium, whose atoms we split (through a process called nuclear fission) to create heat and ultimately electricity.

Question: Wind, biomass, hydropower and ocean energy also renewable energy sources and oil, natural gas, coal and the element uranium are nonrenewable energy sources.

A. True

B. False

Read the passage below and decide whether the statements are TRUE or FALSE?

Many environmental problems seem so big that only governments, local authorities or big companies can deal with them. One example is global warming. We need government action to reduce emissions from coal and oil burning power stations and to develop safer sources of power. These require tough regulations and huge investment. The loss of forests and other habitat is another problem. How can we as individuals stop the destruction of the Amazon or Indonesian rain forests? Yet another example is waste. When people live in cities, they may not be able store or recycle waste, so huge landfills or incinerators are needed.

However, as consumers, we are the ones responsible for all these problems. First of all, we all need to consume less power. We need to turn off lights, replace inefficient bulbs with low-power ones, and not leave equipment on standby. Secondly, we need to control our surging populations. Each of us can make a decision regarding family size. This has a huge impact on the size of our cities and the need for food and more agricultural land. In addition, we need to consider eating less meat and more vegetables and fruit, in order to reduce the amount of land needed for meat. Generally, the main step we need to take is to live more simply. We need to reduce our consumption, recycle, and reuse.

Question: The government’s role is to reduce emissions and develop safer sources of energy.

A. True

B. False

Although solar power which relies on energy from direct (4. sun)_________ is popular in homes as a means of heating water, the most common form of (5.alternate) __________energy is wind power. Modern wind farms, (6. site)_________in the windy areas of the country like Cornwall, consist of modern turbines, which vaguely resemble the old-fashioned (7. wind) _______ that harnessed the power of the wind to grind wheat.

Supporters of wind power are (8. optimism)_________ about the future, saying that wind farms could soon provide 10% of Britain’s energy. It is also less (9. cost) _________ to build a new wind farm than a new coal-fired power station. It is worth remembering that energy (10. conserve) _______ makes sense, as whatever the source, it is cheaper to save energy than to generate it.
