Those pyramids were built of sandstone brick and as royal tombs for the Egyptian rulers. The three most famous pyramids in Egypt are the pyramids of Giza. They were named the great pyramid of Khufu, the pyramid of Khafre and the pyramid of Menkaure. These pyramids were located on the outskirts of Cairo, which is about eight kilometers from the old city of Giza. Each of the three pyramids has its own features. The pyramid of Khufu, known as the Great Pyramid of Giza, is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It is considered the oldest and the only ancient wonder that has survived until the present. Egyptologists believe that the pyramid was built over a period of 20 years as a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, the fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh. Nearby, the pyramid of Khufu’s son named the pyramid of Khafre, was built on higher ground.
