UNESCO has recognized the 82 Doctors’ stone tablets as
a Memory of the World. They are inscribed with the names of

These stone tablets are different from those in other
Asian countries, including China which had influenced

Vietnamese feudal education. The decorations on Viet Nam’s stone tablets were more diverse.
By naming Viet Nam’s stone tablets as a Memory of the World, UNESCO also acknowledges Viet Nam’s
efforts to preserve and promote heritage to international community. The recognition would also help to raise

FESTIVAL

As you know, VietNam has lots of festival. Festivals in Vietnam offer visitors the best opportunity for getting close and personal with the myths, customs and fun-loving spirit of this proud nation. Despite undergoing modern developments, Vietnam is still a predominantly traditional country, with thousands of pagodas and shrines dedicated to Buddha as well as various deities and iconic figures. There are also plenty of cultural events that are only celebrated during certain times of the year (or years).

Lunar New Year, locally called Tet, is the biggest festival of the year with the whole country downing tools for family get-togethers. Principally a religious celebration, don’t expect too much of a wild party, but it’s still a fascinating time to visit Vietnam and you’ll certainly find locals lighting fireworks, visiting temples with their families, and the interesting sight of many flower stalls set up as giving flowers is customary during Tet.

Vietnamese people usually return to their families during Tet. Some return to worship at the family altar or visit the graves of their ancestors in their homeland. They also clean the graves of their family as a sign of respect. Although Tết is a national holiday among all Vietnamese, each region and religion has its own customs.

Tết in the three Vietnamese regions can be divided into three periods, known as Tất Niên (penultimate New Year's Eve), Giao Thừa (New Year's Eve), and Tân Niên (the New Year), representing the preparation before Tết, the eve of Tết, and the days of and following Tết, respectively.

Vietnamese people celebrate the Lunar New Year annually, which is based on a lunisolar calendar (calculating both the earth's movement around the sun and the moon around the earth). Tết is generally celebrated on the same day as Chinese New Year, except when the one-hour time difference between Vietnam and China results in new moon occurring on different days. It takes place from the first day of the first month of the Vietnamese calendar (around late January or early February) until at least the third day. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tết by cooking special holiday food and cleaning the house. These foods include bánh chưng, bánh dày, dried young bamboo soup (canh măng), giò, and sticky rice. Many customs are practices during Tết, such as visiting a person's house on the first day of the new year (xông nhà), ancestor worship, wishing New Year's greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people, and opening a shop.

Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. They start forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hope for a better upcoming year. They consider Tết to be the first day of spring, and the festival is often called Hội xuân (spring festival).

With me, Tet is an opportunity for me to express me gratefulness to my parents, grandparents and to help my mother cook traditional foods. I hope Tet will be a tradition of VietNamese people and won’t be ....................

FAVORITE FOOD

VietNamese cuisine is really abundant and I love it so much. It’s very hard to choose which is my favorite one. But, well, I’ll choose Pho. Because if we talk about VietNamese cuisine, we will think about Pho first, right?

The main ingredient of pho is noodles and broth with sliced beef or chicken. The extra ingredient are pepper, lemon, fish sauce, chili ... They are added depending on the taste of each person

The first time when I ate Pho is when I was 7 years old. I joined a writting contest and after the contest, my mother took me to a small foodstore, then I was attracted by Pho. I was a little bit suprised, because I heard lots of things about Pho but I haven’t taste it at all. Pho had a good impression with me.

When I was a student in primary school, I ate Pho twice a week, because my mother used to take me to the market with her, so I can eat it very often. But now, my family have another member, my little brother, and my school life is much busier so I just can eat Pho about twice a month.

To cook Pho, we need lots of things : vegetables, spices, beef ( or chicken )... and the cooking section is also really complex so I can’t cook it...

I’m so pride, because VietNam has a traditional dish like Pho and I hope, in the future, I can spread Pho and VietNamese culture to foreigners.

Not only that, but some of these stamps are as rare, and as expensive, as Renaissance paintings. The most famous is probably the upside-down airplane stamp, valued at almost 1 million dollars. Also the result of a printing mistake is the world's most expensive stamp, the Treskilling Yellow, so called because it was originally worth three shillings when issued in Sweden in 1855, and because it was supposed to be printed in green, this being the only known sample in yellow. This stamp was recently sold at auction for 1.7 milion pounds, making it the single most expensive item by weight in the world. Of course, amateur philatelists would do well to concentrate on a sub-section of the wonderful world that is philately, such as collecting every stamp issued by a certain government in a year, or collecting every stamp of a particular design, etc. Any other approach to this hobby is a sure fire recipe for frustration and perhaps for ruin.

Shortcomings of Festivals

Although there are many interesting things people can get from the festivals, there are also some
disadvantage.
The first thing is that it is normally very costly to celebrate a festival. Due to the fact that most festivals
aim to preserve and develop the traditional cultural heritages, the government is willing to spend a lot of
money on this occasion. Besides, during the festival, most people do not work and only spend money on
preparing food and buying expensive gifts for their relatives and friends. That's also a reason why it is said
that a festival is often costly.
The second disadvantage is unsafe during a festival. It is estimated that there are hundred accidents
during a festival, particularly road accidents. There are many dangerous festivals like cow-racing, elephant
racing which may be very dangerous for people, especially for children. Moreover, in some festivals, when
rushing to join the events, people may also cause other people to get hurt.
The last disadvantage is festivals may affect the environment seriously. People tend to throw away waste
cans or bottles after a festival. Furthermore, trees along the roadsides may be damaged by the participants.
Noise pollution is result from the noise of the performances and the noise from the crowds.

III. You are going to read an article about a national vote for people’s favourite tree. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-G the one which fits each gap (16). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.

TREE OF THE YEAR

The aim of the national Tree of the Year competition is to promote and celebrate the most interesting trees around the country. Images and descriptions of a shortlist of 28 trees are put online and the public are asked to vote for their favourite.

The four trees that gain the most votes before 5 p.m. on 5th October will be given a grant of £1,000. In addition, all trees that receive 1,000 or more votes will get a grant of £500. The grants may be spent on a tree health check or advice from a tree expert, or an educational event, for example. (82) ………………. Among the 28 shortlisted trees there are a wide range of tree species, each with its own unique, fascinating story. For example, the ‘Ding Dong’ tree is a copper beech tree growing in a primary school playground. It was named the ‘Ding Dong’ tree because of a game pupils invented in which they race to touch its trunk, shouting ‘Ding Dong!’ The protective space underneath the 50-year-old tree is used as a magical outdoor classroom, while the indoor classroom displays pictures of the tree through each season of the year. (83) ……………….

Many of the other trees in the competition are remarkable for their age alone. The Craigends Yew, for example, is thought to be up to 700 years old, making it one of the oldest in Scotland. It is an amazing sight as many of its branches have layered. (84) ………………. As a result of these extra growths, the total size when measured around the tree’s crown (the main body of its leaves and branches) is a massive 100 metres.

Another very old tree, the Holm Oak in Kilbroney Park, Northern Ireland, is much loved by local people. It measures 3.6 metres around the trunk, and its beautiful bark looks like the skin of a snake. (85) ………………. The advantage of this lack of uprightness is that young children can climb safely and easily on it. Kilbroney Park is home to many remarkable trees, but this tree was chosen as the favourite by community members.

A 500-year-old veteran oak tree stands in the ancient woodland pasture at Carngafallt in Wales. One of the interesting things about this twisted, hollow tree is that it has several ‘air trees’ growing out of it. An ‘air tree’ is one growing without its roots touching the ground. (86) ………………. It extends its roots down inside the oak’s hollow trunk.

The original Bramley apple tree in Nottinghamshire is younger than many in this competition, but is the famous parent of all modern Bramley apple trees. (87) ………………. Many years later, Matthew Bramley, the new owner of the tree, was carrying some of his fruit when he met a gardener called Henry Merryweather. Henry asked if he could take some cuttings from Matthew's trees to grow his own trees. Mr Bramley agreed, provided they were named ‘Bramley's Seedling’.

A. This means that they are touching the ground and have taken root.

B. These roots have become enormous with age and have now emerged above the ground. Children love to jump over them like horses in a race.

C. But the most distinctive thing about this tree is that its main trunk is leaning towards the ground at an angle of 45 degrees. D. The best example of this on the big old tree is another species of tree called a rowan.

E. Alternatively, they could be used to hold a community event in honour of the tree. F. It was planted from a seed in 1809 by a woman called Ann Brailsford.

G. Children hang bird feeders from its branches and it is used as the focus of many of the educational activities going on around it.
