We use many different energy sources to do work for us. Energy sources are classified into two groups - renewable and nonrenewable. Non-renewable energy sources are those that take millions of years to form and will run out some day. It is energy that comes from fossil fuels such as coal, crude oil, and natural gas. Fossil fuels are mainly made up of carbon and were formed millions of years ago. The chemical reaction which takes place when we burn fossil fuels releases carbon compounds such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the air. Carbon dioxide is one of the green house gases which is contributing to global warming and air pollution. On the other hand, renewable energy sources will never run out, are better for the environment and do not cause pollution. Renewable energy is often called green energy because it is a natural energy, always available and does not have to be formed like nonrenewable energy. The green energy is always there. For example, the Sun consistently shines, water is abundant, and the winds blow throughout the year. The five types include solar, energy from the Sun; geothermal, energy from heat within the Earth; hydroelectric, energy from moving water; biomass, energy from dead plants and microorganisms and finally, energy from the wind.

1 Can electricity be produced from any sources of energy?

Yes, it can.

2 What would happen if we didn't waste so much energy?

If we didn't waste so much energy, our resources would last longer.

3 Why are many countries spending much more time and money doing research on energy from the sun the waves and the wind?

Because the energy from the sun the waves and the winds last forever.

Thinking about how we will be travelling in 10 or 20 years is very interesting. Will we still be using planes or will we be flying our cars from Paris to London? Here are some suggestions.
- SkyTrain: Currently being developed at NASA, SkyTrain looks like the monorail at Disney World. Moving at 240km/h and using small amount of energy, it could be the future of city transportation. SkyTrain has the passenger capacity of a 6-lane highway.
- Flying cars: Zhu Wenxi and Lai Zexin, Chinese students, have designed a solar-powered flying car that doesn’t need a runway to take off. If you have about 200 hundred thousand dollars, you will own this vehicle soon.
- An electric mininus: The minibus Cameo, designed by Martin Pes, can carry 32 passengers but it is small enough to get its way out of a traffic jam. Its electric motor and low weight mean that it can be recharged in seconds while stopping and it has zero emission.
- An eco-taxi: Taxis are bad for the environment and traffic jams. We enter eco-taxi, and individual taxis form a train powered by solar panels.
1. Decide whether the statements below are True (T) or False (F) : (2,5 marks)
a. SkyTrain is fast but cannot be used as a means of transport in the city. …………
b. Flying cars designed by Zhu Wenxi and Lai Zexin run on solar energy. …………
c. A long runway is necessary for flying cars to take off. …………
d. Because it is small, an electric minibus can avoid traffic jams. …………
e. Several eco-taxis can form a line moving together, using solar energy. …………
2. Answer the following sentences: (2,5 marks)
a. How fast can SkyTrain travel?
………………………………….............................................................................................
b. Where are the designers of flying cars from?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
c. How much money does a flying car cost?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
d. Why should we take eco-taxi instead of other taxis?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
e. Are you interested in these means of transport? Why?

Dear guests, I’d like to talk to you today about renewable and non-renewable energy. Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy sources. They include oil, coal, and natural gas. They can be used to create energy, generate electricity, or drive big machinery. Unfortunately, they are harmful to the environment. Viet Nam still relies mostly on non-renewable energy sources, however, hydro power is increasingly used here too.

Hydro and nuclear power can generate a great deal of energy. They are renewable and plentiful. However, hydro power is limited because dams cannot be built in certain areas. Nuclear power can provide enough electricity for the world’s needs, but it is dangerous. The sun and the wind are other alternative sources of energy. The wind turns turbines to

make electricity. Solar power can be converted into electricity. It can be used to heat or cool our houses. Although there are some disadvantages, these alternative energy sources can offer abundant amounts of clean, safe electricity. They will be valued more and more in the future in Viet Nam.

1.How many types of energy sources are mentioned in the text? What are they?

2.What are the disadvantages of hydro and nuclear power?

3.Why do you think the wind and the sun are called alternative sources of energy?

4.What types of energy does Viet Nam use most?

5.What does the professor think Viet Nam will use more in the future?

1.How many types of energy sources are mentioned in the text? What are they?

Two. They are renewable and non-renewable.

2.What are the disadvantages of hydro and nuclear power?

Hydro power is limited because dams cannot be built in certain areas. Nuclear power is dangerous.

3.Why do you think the wind and the sun are called alternative sources of energy?

Because they are natural sources of power and we use them instead of non-renewable sources to get the electricity we need.

4.What types of energy does Viet Nam use most?

We use non-renewable sources of energy the most but we are increasingly using hydro power.

5.What does the professor think Viet Nam will use more in the future?

He thinks Viet Nam will use the wind and the sun as alternative sources of energy in the future
