Nick:   Hi, Chau. How are things?

Chau:  Good. Have you made up your mind about where to go on holiday?

Nick:   Well, I’ve narrowed it down to two countries - my first choice is France and my second is Japan. What do you think?

Chau:  Well, France is one of the largest countries in Europe. Since we’ve got a four-week summer holiday, you could go on a cycling tour of the country or go on a package tour.

Nick:   No, I’m not into package tours. I’d like to visit the Alps, and climb Mont Blanc - the highest mountain in Western Europe. I’d also love to explore Paris, and go sightseeing in the historic city of Versailles.

Chau:  Sounds exciting! I think it’s quite warm there, much warmer than in Britain. I can just picture you, tanned and relaxed, tasting delicious local specialities like frogs’ legs and snails!

Nick:   Ha ha! That’s not really my cup of tea. Perhaps I should go to Japan and stay at a seaside resort, eating sushi and sashimi every day! Anyhow, Japan is only my second choice.

Chau:  Right. So what do your parents think about your plans?

Nick:   Oh, they’re cool. I’m glad that they let me make my own decisions.

Chau:  Lucky you. Whatever you decide, you’ll have a good time.

Nick:   So what about you? Planning anything?

Chau:  Well, my family... (fades out)

What is your dream life? This is a fairly common question in modern life and the answer to this question is mostly different. So how do you answer this question? This is my answer.

I wish I lived in a big house on a large lake in the forest because the air here is very fresh. It has four floors and four bedrooms throughout in order to see the stars at night, bathrooms for each bedroom and on the top floor outside is an enclosed porch. Our house is protected by the most modern system at that time.

I want to have a happy family. My husband is very handsome and smart. After 5 years I will 3 children. They are very cute and clever. My children are very smart and very cute. My son is cold but he knows how to take care of those around him very well. My first daughter is quite gentle, she can cook a lot of delicious food. But my second daughter is different from her sister. She is very energetic and she just knows to eat and sleep. But we are very close and have a lot of work to do with each other's lives like the other family. I think family is an inestimable present for me.

Every morning I wake up and swim in the lake or jogging, come to make coffee with the French press and make breakfast. Then I take my two dogs for a walk because I enjoy and love animals. After that, I go home and look after my garden, flowers, plants, and vegetables because I want my family can eat healthy things. I go fishing with my kids and my husband clean and cook for lunch. He will make food from fishes I bring back. After lunch, I clean with my husband. We talk to and watch some movies. Then I come to our orchard and pick a few apples and a cake that I want for dessert. I also choose vegetables and some fruits. I will practice yoga, Pilates or classes for my own flexibility. In the evening, I meditate for half an hour, relax with some music and taste a new wine. I will tell some fairy tales to my children. After they sleep, I bright wine into my husband's room. We talk and see the stars in the sky My husband will sing to me sleep. I fall asleep with dreams in my husband's lap. I will welcome the new day with a relaxed spirit.

This is my dream life. I wish It will become truth. And you, what is your dream life?

You are going to read an article in which four athletes talk about what they eat.
For questions 1-10, choose from the athletes (A-D) The athletes may be chosen more than once.

Which athlete
enjoys cooking but finds the planning difficult? 1.
has to carry food with him when training? 2.
doesn’t find it easy to eat before an event? 3.
uses cooking as a way to relax? 4.
sometimes allows himself certain food as a reward? 5.
has seen a change in the diet of sports people? 6.
once made the wrong decision about the food he ate? 7.
says that people are unaware of what he actually eats? 8.
says knowing what and when to eat is critical? 9.
has had to change his diet with a change of sport? 10.

SPORTS DIETS

Four athletes talk about what they eat

A. Mark
When I’m cycling on my own I stuff my pockets with bananas and protein bars. On the longest rides
I’ll eat something every half an hour. For heavier training it’s physically impossible to get enough energy
from food alone, so you do rely on energy drinks. One development in sports nutrition since I’ve been
competing is the focus on the importance of protein. Cycling is much more weight-orientated than the
swimming I used to do, which means I need to eat differently now. Protein feeds the muscles but keeps
them as lean as possible. I’ve been an athlete for 20 years so healthy eating is normal for me, but that's
not to say I don’t get a tasty take-away meal from time to time. I’ve just learned to spot the meals that
will provide what I need, it’s simple things like steering clear of the creamy sauces and making sure I get
lots of veg.
B. Stefan
Everyone says: “As a runner you must be on a really strict diet. Do you only eat salad? Are you
allowed chocolate?” But that’s really not the case. I’ve got salad and vegetables in my shopping trolley
but there’s always some chocolate in there, too. I do most of the cooking at home, On the morning of a
competition, I get so nervous I feel really sick. I have to force myself to have something so I’ll have
enough energy to perform well. Sometimes I get those days where I don’t want to be so disciplined. You
think: ‘I’ve trained really hard, I deserve to have a pizza.’ It’s OK to have a little relapse every now and
then but I can’t do it every day or I’d be rolling round the track!
C. Guy
For a gymnast, a kilo can make all the difference. But if you don’t eat enough you’ll be a bit shaky
and weak. It’s all about eating the right amount, at the right time - two hours before you do anything,
Breakfast is fruit and if I’m a bit peckish, whole wheat toast and butter! I get to training for 12 pm, then
break after three hours for lunch - more fruit, a cheese and tomato sandwich. I’m back in the gym from 5
pm to 8 pm, then I go to my Mum’s for steak and vegetables or chicken and salad. I don’t tend to mix
carbs with meat late at night. I’m not the best cook, but I think it’s fun to do. I know how to make chicken
from my mum’s recipe, it just takes me a bit longer to get organized.
D. Tomas
It’s definitely possible to eat delicious food and be a professional swimmer. I’ve always loved food so
I’m not going to be obsessive because you can get what you need and still enjoy every bite. I’m not
really one for endless protein shakes and energy drinks. Before a training session I’d rather have a
banana. That’s not to say I’m perfect. At the world championships I got my feeding strategy wrong - and
I paid for it. For my sport it’s what you eat two days before the competition that makes the difference.
You have to “carb load” - eat piles of rice or pasta - and I didn’t. I was leading for a long way but I ended
up 11 th . My biggest indulgence is pastry. And I love baking. I train for 33 hours a week so in my time off I
need to rest, and spending time in the kitchen is perfect. Swimming is my biggest passion but baking
comes a close second.

I. Read the passage and do the tasks that follow. ____________________________ Playing football on the beach, samba dancing at night, relaxing with a delicious ice-cold fruit juice in an outdoor café, meeting sociable, hospitable people: this is what I think of when I remember the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro. ____________________________ Rio is called "The Marvellous City" for a good reason. It is in an extraordinary location in Guanabara Bay, surrounded by spectacular mountains and by impressive sandy beaches facing south onto the Atlantic. The views almost everywhere in the city are breathtaking. ____________________________ There is something to do in Rio 24/7. In the morning, you can visit the centre with its museums and picturesque, historic churches or go up Mount Christ with Corcovado to see the eye-catching statue of Christ with its stunning views. In the afternoon, you can relax on the beach and watch the world go by or join in a football game with the welcoming, good-natured locals. Or you can go to the striking Maracana Stadium to watch the professionals play. At night, there is music and dancing everywhere. Even if you are not a brilliant samba dancer, you will have an amazing time. ____________________________ Of course, Rio does have problems. There are enormous areas of depressing slums on the hills around the city and violent crime can be a problem, though the situation has improved recently. However, for me Rio is one of the most fascinating places in the world and Cariocas the warmest people, so I cannot wait to go back!

City Life or Country Life? Which place is the better - the city or the country? Two American teenagers talk about where they live. Leo, 16: I live in New York and it’s great. There are huge shopping centres and interesting places to go. My mum loves all the art galleries and museums, but I like Central Park where I go skateboarding. It's big enough to get away from the noise and traffic. The country isn't for me. It isn’t exciting enough for people of my age. Most people don't live close enough to their friends to have enough a good social life. It's too quiet and too boring. City life is the best. Amelie, 14: I live on a ranch in the country, in Colorado. In the summer, we go hiking in the mountains, and in the winter I go snowboarding. I really like it because it's relaxing and quiet. I can’t imagine life in the city. It isn't safe enough to walk around alone and it’s too dangerous to cycle in the streets because of the traffic. Overall, I think the city is too noisy, too dirty, too crowded and too expensive. I prefer country life!

Find native English speakers      In certain areas it’s the hardest thing to do, but it’s the best use of your time. Talking to actual native speakers is the most effective way to improve your English skills, speaking or otherwise. So whether you have to Skype them, call them, or beg them to speak to you, do so. Your progress will be faster this way than any other.

Listen to the music of English    No, not English music, the music of English - its lilt, its prosody, the sing-songy-ness of it. The intonation. Even if you speak perfect English technically, if you speak it like a robot you’re not speaking it the way it’s meant to be spoken.

Slow down    Above all, if you want to be understood, slow down. The more clearly you speak, the better chance your listener has of understanding you. It’s tempting to get nervous and want to speed up to get it all over with, but you can’t do that! Clarity is key - for some native English speakers, too!

Record yourself   Though we hear ourselves all the time, we really don’t know quite what we sound like. So record yourself! What are the weak and strong points you hear in your speech? And then you can concentrate on what you need to work on.

Speak English at home    This is the biggest, easiest mistake to make. You go about your day, you’re on the job working partly in English, you go to your English class, and then you go home and revert back to your native tongue. While you may be making slow improvements, you’ll never get past that dreaded lingual plateau. Make a point to speak it at home, too. Have only English at the dinner table. Stick to English TV at home. Make it as 24/7 as possible.

Talking to actual native speakers is the least effective way to improve your English skills

A. True

B. False

But in Britain, as well as the US, men in offices usually wear suits and ties, and women wear dresses of skirts (not trousers). Doctors, lawyers and business people wear quite formal clothes. And in some hotels and restaurants men have to wear ties and women wear smart dresses. In many years, Americans are more relaxed than British people, but they are more careful with their clothes. At home, or on holiday, most Americans wear informal or sporty clothes. But when they go out in the evening, they like to look elegant. In good hotels and restaurants, men have to wear jackets and ties, and women wear pretty clothes and smart hairstyles. It is difficult to say exactly what people wear informal or formal in Britain and the US, because everyone is different. If you are sure what to wear, watch what other people do and then do the same. You’ll feel more relaxed if you don’t look too different from everyone else.
