Space (41) ……………………is sending people or machines into space to visit other planets and objects in space. Mankind has (42) ……………………of visiting the stars for hundreds of years, but it wasn’t until 1969 that the first person walked on the Moon. Since the first person walked on the Moon, hundreds of (43) ……………………have been launched into orbit around the earth, and hundreds of people have been into space on lots of different types of spacecraft. We have also sent machines to investigate objects that are (44) ……………………away in the Solar System.

Apart from the Moon, the most popular place to send (45) ……………………space expeditions is to Mars. Since the year 2000, there have been 10 unmanned expeditions to Mars, including putting spacecraft into (46) ……………………around Mars and landing machines called rovers to (47) ……………………the surface. NASA sent the rover Curiosity to Mars in 2012 to look for (48) ……………………of life. They haven’t found it yet, but they are going to keep on looking!

Now private companies are starting to (49) ……………………into space too. Virgin Galactic sells tickets for a short trip into space for £130,000! Passengers won’t go high enough to go into orbit, but they will spend about six minutes in space. The whole trip will take two and a half hours from (50) ……………………to landing.

A planet is a body in space that revolves around a star. There are nine planets in our solar system, and these nine planets travel around the sun. The names of the planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Planets travel in orbits around their stars . All of the planets of the solar system revolve in elliptical orbits. In other words, their orbits are like large, flat circles. The time that it takes a planet to make one revolution around the sun is called its year. The Greek were the first people to recognize and give names to some of the planets. The word planet comes from a Greek word meaning wanderer. If a person wanders, this means that he goes from one place to another and does not have a home. The Greek thought that the planets “wandered” in the sky. However, modern scientists can predict the movement of the planets very accurately

____ 1/ A planet revolves around the Earth.

____2/ Venus, Mars and Neptune are planets and stars.

____ 3/ The Greek were the first to recognize some of the planets.

____ 4/ The planets in our solar system travel around the sun and in elliptical orbits

Long ago a lot of people thought the moon was God. Other people thought it was just a light in the sky. And others thought it was a big ball cheese!

The telescopes were made. And men saw that the moon was really another world. They wondered what it was like. They dreamed of going there.

On July 20th, 1969, that dream came true. Two American men landed on the moon. Their names were Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin. The first thing the men found was that the moon is covered with dust. The dust is so thick that the men left footprints where they walked. Those were the first marks a living thing had ever made on the moon. And they could stay there for years and years. There is no wind or rain to wipe them off.

The two men walked on the moo for hours. They picked up rocks to bring back to earth for study. They dug up dirt to bring back. They set up machines to find out things people wanted to know. Then they climbed back into their moon landing craft.

This story tells …………….

Next day the landing craft roared as the men took off the moon. They joined Michael Collins in the spaceship that wait for them above the moon. Then they were off on their long trip back to earth.

Behind them they left the plains and tall mountains of the moon. They left the machines they had set up.

And they left footprints that may last forever.

A. about the first men to walk in the moon

B. how men found footprints on the moon

C. what the men brought back from their trip to the moon

D. who had left footprints on the moon before the two men landed there.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

A Mission to Mars

Have you ever had a dream of traveling to another planet in our solar system? If you have, there is an actual programme that is happening right now, and it hopes to send people to Mars in 2023. Known as the Mars One Mission, it will send a crew of four people on a one -way mission to colonize Mars. Those chosen people will have to be ready to say good-bye to the earth forever, as there will not be a return trip. For the people chosen, they will have to learn to do many different things. First of all, they will be living the rest of their lives with just a handful of other people, so they all must have personalities that allow them to get along. Second, the living quarters that they will have won’t be very spacious, so they will have to deal with that condition as well. If they feel homesick, they will only be able to communicate with people back on the earth via e-mail, video and audio sent back and forth. However, there won’t be any real-time communication. Even at the speed of light, communication between the earth and Mars takes about 20 minutes. Whether the Mars One Mission will actually happen is the big question that a lot of people are asking. There is an enormous skepticism in the science community, and Wired magazine gave the mission a miserable score of two out of ten on its probability scale. However, for those who dream of going to Mars, at least they can say there is a possibility that it could happen.

1, Who might like to go on this mission ?

A. People who get along with thers

B. People who get homesick easily

C. People with angry personalities

D. People who don't like to communicate

2, What will NOT happen to the people who go on the Mars One Mission ?

A. They will communicate with people on the earth

B. They will have to live with other people

C. They will live in quarters that don't have a lot of space inside

D. They will return to the earth

4. Which of the following is considered miserable ?

A. A crew on board of the Mars One Mission

B. A score of the programme on the probability scale

C. A personality of people taking part in the programme

D. A mission of astronauts to the ISS

5. How long will it take for a message to come back from Mars ?

B. Only a few seconds

D. About an hour
